2 Designs
2.1 Writes or communicates a short and clear statement or a design brief for the development of a product or system related to a context, problem, need or opportunity that has been identified by self.
2.2 Lists product and design specifications and constraints for a solution to an identified problem, need or opportunity based on all of the design key words listed below:
·      People: age, target market, human rights, access;
·      Purpose: function, what the product will do;
·      Appearance and aesthetics: form, colour, shape, feel;
·      Environment: where the product will be used or made, impact on the environment in the long and short term;
·      Safety: for users and manufacturers;
·      Cost: cost of materials, wastage, cost of manufacture, maximum selling price;
·      Ergonomics;
·      Quality;
·      Production: mass production, batch production, one-off production.

Assessment Task

Scenario – Background context

There is a great deal of discontent from many poor communities, because they feel that the government should provide them with homes.  They are living in very poorly constructed temporary shacks which do not really protect them from the cold and rain.  In some municipalities, the people burn tyres and protest against the lack of basic houses and service delivery.  The government is anxious to prevent further conflict and an escalation of violence and is looking at developing low-cost houses that will be acceptable to the people but at the same time affordable within the housing budget.

Design brief

Write a design brief for a model of a low-cost house to be made for the community.  In the design brief you must state:
·         what exactly must be done
·           all constraints, such as size, numbers of rooms, materials to be used etc.
